There will be a civil war...but it won't be over being able to watch videos on FB...the underlying problem that caused the video is what needs to be addressed
> "...to sustain that person in government-managed housing, with government-managed food, clothing, ect."
This sounds like a nightmare and to me it wouldn't feel like I'm free at all...being so dependent on the government seems like a terrible idea...Who would want to be so reliant on the government for such basic needs?
I propose it as completely optional. You basically can choose to depend on the government at a very young age, or have a career for more material wealth.
That's why I suggest working towards shortening loan payments, so someone can have a career and get similar benefits.
> ...but when they don't bring help and expect you to haul their heavy ass table up flights of steps. Yeah, no.
Imagine being the friend with the F250 and a powerlifter...I get asked to help move all the time and some expect me to help move furniture because, as they sometimes jokingly say, "you like to move heavy objects in your spare time anyway"...
> I suspect that the biggest cause of disability is simply obesity. Government has a role to clean up the food supply and agricultural system, not to give handouts to millions of people affected by its dysfunction.
While I somewhat agree with your sentiment, and I'm not a big fan of the fact that these obese people are weighing down (no pun intended) our health care system, there really isn't a good solution that I can think of that doesn't limit these fat people's ability to make decisions about what they eat and how physically active they are day to day. I'd rather have a bunch of fatties making terrible health decisions and causing more stress on our healthcare system than having some Government representative telling people what they can or cannot do in the name of protecting them and keeping them healthy...
> I would be extremely pissed if that criterion was applied.
It isn't a matter of "if"...that is the standard now, lower scores for certain demographics...that is why I don't put Asian on anything...as a mixed-race Filipino, I can pass as some kind of Latino which is what I now "identify" with since it helps me in nearly every case imaginable...it kind of sucks, but that is the world we now live in.
> that is the standard now, lower scores for certain demographics
I was talking about the opposite case: belonging to a class whose scores are artificially raised. If I can get excellent scores and get admitted by myself, but then everybody thinks that I got admitted due to my ethnic background, not due to my merits. Infuriating!
> it kind of sucks, but that is the world we now live in.
That certainly does not seem to be the case in Europe.
> I was talking about the opposite case: belonging to a class whose scores are artificially raised. If I can get excellent scores and get admitted by myself, but then everybody thinks that I got admitted due to my ethnic background, not due to my merits. Infuriating!
I think I follow you...that must not be fun...having everyone think you didn't deserve the spot you earned because of other undeserving "diversity applicants"
> That certainly does not seem to be the case in Europe
I was talking about the U.S. because the author of the article was talking about the U.S...I should have been more specific
How do Jews get a leg up from affirmative action and legacies when the application doesn't ask for your religion (any more) and there were quotas in the past to limit the number of Jewish students?
To be fair, whether there is affirmative action or bias or not, characteristic names give a lot away for this religious-ethnic group, as with other groups.
That article on first reading appears to be a balanced and well-argued article, but it concerns me that other articles on that site appear to be literally concerned with Holocaust denial and are generally israel-obsessed; alongside other far right wing and outlandish conspiracy theories. Therefore I'm sceptical and would wish to fact check further.
Uh...that wasn't antisemetic...when talking about Ivy league representation, Jews are disproportionately represented which is why I distinguished between "Jewish Whites" and Non-Jewish Whites...
2. Being Jewish is also strongly correlated to class. 44% of Jews earn 100K+. Thats compared to ~20% for Christian, 19% Catholic, 20% Islam. (Interestingly Hindus are close at 36%).
I didn't downvote you and I hope that my comment comes across as more similar to a vuln disclosure than a threat.
Your employer is listed in your HN profile. Assuming that you actually work for that company, you should be careful making such comments, even if your intent is completely benign.
When I was a reporter (I'm not anymore) I trawled HN comments for stories. It is not inconceivable that some Gizmodo-esque rag might write "[Redacted] Employee Making Racist Comments on Tech Forum" or whatever.
I didn't realize police prosecute unfairly and was just looking at the stats...a friend shared an article on the targeting/prosecution breakdown and it wasn't favorable for young Blacks in the U.S.
Most of the articles I've read and people I've talked with from England have said that immigration and keeping England English was the main concern behind Brexit...have views on non-English immigrants changed?
While these were some of the claims made in favour of Brexit, there were also many wild claims regarding how much money the NHS would get now that the UK didn't need to send money to the EU and similar lies regarding trade deals and how everything would be better once Johnny Foreigner was kicked out. Now people are discovering unpleasant truths like how much of the NHS depended on foreign nurses and doctors and the amount of EU money that was propping up these small Leave-voting villages.
If you want a good laugh you should take a look at some of the claims made by Johnson, Farage, and Gove during the campaign.
People who want their country to stay their country (in terms of ethnicity and culture) are still worthy of discussion...it is a valid political position...you can't just say "they don't count, please provide somebody else we can discuss that fit my narrow definition of right-wing"
What you are talking about is tangential to do with the left-
right spectrum, though (unless I am misinformed of course, who are you talking about got banned for what? I meant it as an honest question, not a rhetoric one)
