I personally hate that I need to download app from every company for every service they offer. On the other hand I love tje simplicity of opening webpage, do what I want to do there and forget it. Probably 80% of app in my phone are used very rarely, often just once yet they still sit there, getting updates, requesting permissions and sometimes eating battery... good web app can do everything native app can.

> good web app can do everything native app can.

I could not disagree more

Your disagreement only remains valid because of Apple using their blocking power to quash web APIs from becoming standards. You can shill all you want for Apple, but they are being sued by the DOJ for abusive business tactics, which include leveraging their vote in the W3C to prevent web browsers on their platform from being as capable as native apps.

Sorry, but you are the one obsessed with Apple for some reason and are projecting the opposite of that (shilling) on me. I don't have any particular reason to favor Apple.

I do, however, notice that I have never used a program that was built with either a web stack or a gc language stack, that wasn't getting slower over time, wouldn't cause strange issues, and wouldn't have crippled UI to match whatever the stack's limitations have been at the time. IMO the right direction is developing (or adopting) modern native languages. If the "price" for that is some web standard being stuck, I personally am totally okay with that.

I am sick of this idea that the web browser is almost an OS. It was supposed to serve web pages.

You have to imagine other people might think differently than you do... I forget, it happens, nothing I can do with it. Having notification on my phone (place I'll look sooner or later) that laundry is done was great lifehack for me. No longer I forget and leave it there for whole night or even days...

You need ID to buy cigarettes and alcohol, prescription drugs or to get sim card... you will need it to register for social network account... do not seem as big of a deal to me. Even less when considering all the positives.

When I show my ID at the cash register I assume the person working there doesn’t instantaneously memorize all my details and then write down when exactly I was at the shop, along with other details, to use this info later for their own reasons.

Whereas if I upload my ID to a tech company (that potentially answers to both my own government and foreign governments, as well as having its own ad-related agenda) I am a bit less certain about what will happen to this data.

"A bit less certain" is a really mild way of putting it. I'd be confident that whatever ID I upload to the Internet is going to be stored forever, shared with "partner" companies, linked with as much data about me as those partner companies can find, and then eventually leaked in a security breach, resulting in the company issuing a press release telling everyone they "Take Security Very Seriously."

Needing ID to buy a sim card was a big deal, though. Didn't seem like it because it seemed like we still had the internet for anonymous communication. That will be gone soon by the looks of it. Frog status: boiled.

The problem is that they promise to delete IDs but then don't, and get hacked, and then all that personal information is published to the dark web for nefarious purposes. If you need evidence, it just happened again to 70,000 Discord users: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8jmzd972leo

Showing ID at a store doesn't de-facto make a copy. They don't associate my full ID to the purchase, at most a manually entered DoB.

And if you're suggesting Digital ID (EUDI style); showing ID at the store doesn't share metadata of that purchase with the government.

that's exactly my proposal with protecting children online - issue unique certificates for some symbolic price like 1EUR which will be sold over 18yo in shops exactly same as alcohol and cigarettes where nobody writes down your ID details, heck don't even have a look if you look old enough, that's as far as I am willing to go to protect kids (without this certificate) online, anything else is just internet deanonymization

When traveling abroad, it always surprises me when I’m asked for my id when buying alcohol. That’s only a thing in my country when you’re in the age bracket in which it’s risky to tell your age just by your looks, but after that, I haven’t been asked for my id since at least I’m 20 or 21 (drinking age is 18 here).

Prescription drugs are different because those are tied to your name anyway, and that’s why medical information has a different protection standard.

As a parent of 2 I think it’s better to talk to your kids, check what they’re up to, and, you know, be involved in their lives. Also, as a former kid, if there’s something they want to do but you don’t want them to: they’ll do it. Better that they know they can trust you to say “I still want to do X” than have to do it in hiding and without your support if anything goes wrong.

I hope this is a satire post..

American here. it's a very big deal.

Thank you for your wisdom, oracle of freedom.

American American or 'American' with account registered in Nigeria/India using VPN to post on social media?

For Europeans ID is not as big of a deal as losing democracy thru foreign influence manipulating public opinion on a massive scale.

"losing democracy through foreign interest" brother the pedo globalists are importing the entire 3rd world into your countries to support property prices and maintain power. you guys are beyond cooked. call us when you need us.

Then there's nothing for you here, you don't live in Spain.

ok i will get in line: the rest of the world first, then america, then the spanish last. as is your wish. if you need us we'll be here.

Punishment is only one reason of inprisonment, another is correction. Majority of prisoners do not serve lifetime sentence, at some point they wikl return to society and ideally you don't want them to get right back to what they have been doing before because they have no other options or they don't know nothing better.

NixOS is open-source, if needed it can be forked anytime and continued to work on with new maintainers.

And flakes make that viable

But tou don't have to pick one, you can have both. I pay for gamepass and most of the games I play I'm fine not owning them ever. But when any is worth it, I purchase is on steam and can have it forever. And I really don't mind "paying twice" because the game is worth it.

Currently in the process of obtaining vw eup, I'm little bit nervous if I'm not doing a mistake but this thread gave me some comfidence. Thanks

Really love this project, I only have small little UX nitpick: as lefthanded person it is quite cumbersome to tap right side of screen. Go to solution is to navigate using swiping which is ambidexterous.

As a left-handed person I have no problem holding the phone in my right hand when I need to use UI on that side of the screen. Though I do prefer phones on the small side.

This is why I love small phones - I’m able to reach and tap with left thumb quite easily on my iPhone SE.

Life on Earth would be perfect ecosystem without human. Sure lion eats zebra but there are no animal species capable of eradicating other species. my (very amateurish) opinion is that "high inteligence" is very effective and successful short term genetic strategy (it allowed very average mammal species to become absolute apex predator) but long term it is very unsustainable and self destructive. Look at the lion, apex predator in his environment and it is completely content. People are never content, always need more and more. We are intelligent but so bored that we spend most of our time finding out new ways to kill or at least hate each other.

yea, I'm not a big fan of Humanity...

Perfect by whose measure? How do you know lions are content? Do you speak lion? Are all humans permanently discontented or just the noisiest ones? Contented people don’t scream as much.

I’ve thought like this, or versions of it, before in my life. Eventually figured out it was just globalized philosophized depression. I’ve come to call it “low serotonin philosophy.” (Yes, the serotonin hypothesis for depression is a huge oversimplification, but it’s a catchy name.)

While I agree that facebook is mostly obsolete outside marketplace, one thing I cannot find substite for is small communities mostly tied to specific location. If I go to facebook it is for marketplace (we have nice dedicated web in our country that works great) but for one or two groups created for our neighbourhood and the wider area around us.

Isn't that what nextdoor is? I have no firsthand experience but hear it talked about.

Nextdoor has cornered the racist busybody market but nothing beyond that.

That's how I imagine facebook but haven't been there in years.
