I wrote in another comment but basically yes. Also they can focus on other cases that require physical presence. No need to patrol the entire subway, put 100 police officers to just patrol, every station when you can have 2-3 guys watch the cameras and just 2-3 patrols ready for intervention.

If you're more likely to be caught due to the surveillance, logic would dictate that it's the greater deterrent.

My brother had his window smashed and bag stolen under a cctv camera in London. The police never even investigated.

I would hazard to say that wouldn't have happened had a police officer been stood there instead.

Some major shops in the UK have photographs of police officers on the door, because it reduces theft!

Because it’s hard to investigate that with old cctv tech. Unless the person on the video was easily identifiable, it’s hard to do anything to follow up. With the new networked AI tech you could search for the person across the whole network to find out where they went / get a better view of them.

I think this says more about dwindling police budgets than about the efficacy of surveillance or bobbies on the beat.

I don't mind it. I work in the same field and people don't want to work in government institutions anymore, there are less and less kids in police/military schools. Cameras allow officers to stop patrolling and do more preventive work, focus on hard cases, etc. In a relative small city we manage 500+ cameras and more are added every day. The problem is storage and finding people to monitor them. My only issue is getting it in hands of some crazy dictator, but that is another story.

That IS the story though. The kind of offences these cameras disuade pale in comparison with the risk of abuse of power infringed in the 99.999% of innocent people these cameras are pointed at suppose.

Most people don't grok the built-in threat. They only realize when inevitably they are in deep shit already, then all the 'how could we have known' empty phrases come to surface.

Every society gets what they deserve at the end (which doesn't mean every individual, thats why its optimal to live in society that has similar core values and moral 'height' to not be constantly depressed from fellow citizens and their decisions ie in voting).

Maintaining freedom requires continuous effort that can be unpleasant, not giving up privacies 1 by 1 to get deep into / maintain undisturbed comfort zone. Laziness is one way to kill freedom.

So you're okay with more and more power held by fewer and fewer people, but balk at all the power held by one person. Where is the line, how will you recognize it, and having done so how will you arrest the trend?

thankfully the US doesn't have a crazy dude on top right now. dictator is probably a bit far fetched, but to be honest...

I use tp-link everything. I have all of them connected to self-hosted Omada controller in docker. Works like a breeze, including notifications. Used MikroTik before but "the dude" or whatever is called now was hit and miss. Probably you don't need it anymore if get llm to configure it.

Sorry, I trust Google more than my government for my data. I mean I trust photos, youtube, music, gmail, wallet, keep, etc. what is that I have left anyway? It's sad that we started from open web, but we ended up in the hands of few. Apple/Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Amazon decide basically how I live my life. I don't want to (and sometimes I try to hard), but I don't want to give up the convenience also, but not only mine, also for my family is in the same pot.

Given the chance, Google would kill you by accident.

I had the somehow the same problem with a mobile operator here in EU. They said just by sending an email I agree with their new terms and subscriptions. It's a gray area, IMO. They could simply terminate the service but who wants that?

It happened to others but there are also some very good examples like Veeam community edition which, IMO, is the best backup software. They had lots of discussions and even pressure from management to terminated, but the numbers made a lot of sense and they kept it. Tailscale is in disadvantage here because they are in a very crowded market and it will be very easy to slip into one corner and let way for others like netbird, netmaker, nebula(?), wireguard (like u said), etc.

I use it strictly on older systems that only use telnet and for casual port checking on some equipment. Last time I had to check if AIS equipment is working properly. Some people think "servers" are the only thing in this world. Telnet is one of those things that probably keeps this world function properly.

For port checking I use `curl -v telnet://host:port`

I did the same... even faster. I installed it, suggested me some local crap. I wanted ltt, mkbhd, etc. searched those 2, added them, after that first 2 videos were the same crap. uninstall. even youtube is better. It's so much content on youtube that It's impossible to watch it all in a lifetime even at 5x speed. And 10x better content.

Samsung should not give up DEX, is mature and works exceptionally well with applications that are supported (wireless DEX with my samsung tv works great). Knowing Google, they will give up after 5 iterations or updates will be very slow. It is good for the ecosystem, I hope it will become more mainstream.

Dex and Android desktop mode are not a single new thing, but multiple features that partially have been in Android for years, like external screens, resizable windows and the (currently rather limited) external screen drawer.
