Gambling and weapons (or "defence" depending on perspective) are two industries I refuse to work on principle.

On my deathbed I want to look back on life and feel I've made a small positive impact on the world.

If your deathbed is at the hands of an adversary that beat you because you didn't have any weapons, do you think your views might change?

"John helped his uncle, Jack off a horse"

"John helped his uncle Jack off a horse"

Two very different outcomes...

shouldn't there be another comma after Jack?

John helped his uncle, Jack, off a horse.

Because while speaking it I only pause after uncle and "Jack off a horse" together next. feels like there should be another pause after Jack?

It's a sibling to curl in that way

Big difference for ffmpeg especially (but I imagine for curl too): it's not just one guy in Nebraska. Seems to have a very healthy community of devs involved in it.

Well, I don't how it is these days, but it hasn't always been describable as "Healthy".

I guess you guys have never heard of HarfBuzz, huh?

Pi-hole operates on your local network.

NextDNS performs the same thing but on the public internet, removing the dependency on a VPN to the private local network.

+1 for NextDNS.

Been a happy user for a few years now and introduced many non-tech friends/family into the world of 99% advert-free internet.

High five fellow DnB heads :)

That Source Direct release was out of this world... absolutely beautiful body of work

Sponsored segments is no different to Netflix (and other producers) selling "product placement" in TV shows or films. If anything they are far more subtle and effective as the viewer isn't usually aware.

I remember once watching an episode (can't remember the show) where the dialogue included characters talking about how good their new car was. The B-rolls would show almost every angle of the car too.

Sure enough, according to the end credits, the episode had product placement from the car manufacturer.

This instance it was a little _too_ obvious but I have no doubt I've been exposed to hundreds of in-film/show adverts.

“House” did this for some episodes during one season. It was, indeed, obvious and truly horrible. An ugly stain on an otherwise excellent show.

I learned wheel building many years ago from Sheldon's website and that lead to many great memories fixing other racer's wheels around camp fires in my 20s.

A fantastic resource!

Similar story. As a student I bought an old bike and restored it thanks to lots of info I found from Sheldon. And building a wheel was such a fun but weird experience. Part mechanics, part art.

I ended up writing my thesis on bicycle wheels after this. Or, it's a thesis on optimization algorithms, but I managed to play around with optimizing wheels as the "real world application". https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10410813

Operating on such a tight budget is more common than you might think and they could have been hit with a surprise bill that's pushed them into debt.

Of course. I'm not talking about lack of money though here. We've all been on our last tenner until payday and need to go somewhere.

Some people seem to think that spending less at the pump means your saving money, but to save money you need to drive less. They religiously drive on £10-20 fuel stops.

My ex wife was convinced she spends less on fuel by putting less in a time, she even earnt more than me.

So who's the fire starter - the twisted fire starter?

Perhaps it's always been burning, since the world's been turning?

In Utah it's 4:20PM

Amazing! What a gift. I really enjoyed that, and will continue to really enjoy that for years to come.

Thank you for this, I had never seen it and it brought me joy.

bravo!
