Caltech | Pasadena, CA | Open Source Software Engineer | ONSITE | VISA

The Simons Collaboration on the Nonperturbative Bootstrap (http://bootstrapcollaboration.com) seeks applicants for the position of Research Software Engineer. Our Collaboration focuses on developing new computational techniques for studying and solving nonperturbative quantum field theories based on high-precision convex optimization.

You will: - Collaborate with faculty and researchers to develop open-source solutions for nonperturbative computations in quantum field theory; – Explore applications of high-performance computing and GPUs to improve and scale our current tools; – Assist researchers with optimizing, parallelizing, distributing, and using shared software tools.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in (high-performance, open source) numerical programming in C/C++/Python. Additional experience with functional languages (e.g. Haskell or Mathematica) would be appreciated.

This is a one year term position, with the possibility of extension up to three years. The position will be based at the Caltech campus in Pasadena, CA.

Hi David. This sounds incredibly interesting. Would there be possibility of a collaboration with an FFRDC (the status of my current employer)? Of course it seems onsite is preferred, but it is possible that a partnership could be fruitful for both parties. My background is in mathematics, and I now do software. There are available tools here as well such as supercomputing facilities. Is there an e-mail contact I could send an e-mail to, or should I just "apply" through the linked requisition for more follow-up? Thanks!

Hi, I hadn't thought about the possibility, but I'd be happy to talk more about it. Feel free to email me (dsd at caltech dot edu).

Note that this lightsaber would require the user (and his/her opponent) to be submerged in supercooled Rubidium.

True, but theoretically we could construct an energy field that surrounds the user, his opponent, and all other living things.

Just don't try and fight drones.

An energy field that binds the galaxy together!

Simple tricks and nonsense.

Luminous beings are we! Not this crude matter.

No mystical energy field controls my destiny.

Also, wouldn't anything like the traditional lightsaber glow constitute losses of photons from the crystal structure? That might become a problem.
