I dabbled with this 10-15 years ago.

I always ignore all numbers on the dashboard. All I care about is how much I paid, and how much revenue went up in following weeks.

I never could quite get that number positive.

pro tip: do not try this on a microwave you want to keep. if you are successful you will likely cause a fire in your microwave. (it is fun, though).

Not to worry. In high school, my friend and I used the cafeteria microwave for this particular experiment. It was only a modest, baby fire… and some yelling from a teacher. Miraculously no detention. But science was done on that day.

I thought that this sort of science was usually beer fuelled, late in the party at someone else’s house.

As a counterpoint, this essay resonated with me very deeply, and I earn a low salary for an engineer in NYC.

We do fine as a family and have to make compromises I couldn’t have imagined making prior to having kids, but it’s totally worth it.

This type of experience isn’t universal but doesn’t require massive wealth.

No one is saying it's not possible or not worthwhile; just that it's a very different experience in some ways.

This is a _really_ good point! I'm trying to find some data on this right now... might have to dig through e.g. Apple's previous phone releases to see trends over time.
