So the author recycled 10 pounds of plastic, but used 8.5 pounds of glue to do so (184 sticks at 0.74 oz which seems to be average for glue sticks).

Cool project, but that ratio seems very ineffective. Especially since there is a realistic chance this ends up in landfill within some decades anyway.

I'm so glad that fad is over. My mother worked as a theatre artisan before retirement and it was, among other things, fumes from curing epoxy that caused numerous health issues down the line.


I am curious about the down-the-line effects of fumes from printing PLA and PETG. Reddit posts suggest no ill effects, but it hasn’t been long enough in the hobbyist world.


My printer is near a window so I just added an exhaust duct to the window, in the past when it wasn't close to a window I ran that duct through some filters (charcoal, furnace filter stuff) and left the end near an additional air purifier i had in the space.


There's lots of YouTube carpeters that still do it in custom built tables. And these are very expensive custom builds too...

Isn’t plastic nearly free as a raw material as a by product of fossil fuel production? I was always told it’s the opposite, plastic bags are better for the environment if disposed of properly because they’re so light weight to transport, didn’t need to be farmed, and companies basically give away the raw material because it would be more expensive to dispose of. A cotton bag needs to be reused upwards 1000x to be less impactful, or was I bamboozled?

Yes and no. Oil is cracked down for lots of different things, but one of the things that people are really aiming for is ethane which can be used to make industrial ethanol, and a lot of plastics.

What you end up with to get there is lots of propane and butane, which is used as a fuel gas, but most of that ends up going up the flare stack because there's so much of it. We won't stop doing this while we still use plastics and fertiliser.

You need very clean propane or butane for things like cooking stoves, but you can run car engines on it just fine because they're so much less picky, and the exhaust gases are far cleaner than engines run on heavier fractions like oh maybe octane. This is why things like warehouse forklifts run on gas instead of diesel or petrol - you don't die if you breathe in the fumes, because there's no unburnt fuel or carbon monoxide, because it runs as lean as a vegan's dog.

The amount of gas flared globally adds up to little over 1% of global energy production. I know that doesn't sound like much but we're talking like terawatts. It truly is a mind boggling amount of energy that gets wasted because we simply can't get it to users cheap enough.


If only all (or almost all) of it was flared! Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, and unfortunately there is still a lot of it escaping from oil installations unflared (https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/charts/potential-emi...).


It's a pain in the arse to run vehicles on methane (CNG) because it has to be stored at around 250 bar (or, 3600psi in Old People Units), and it's really not very energy-dense so you need a lot of it.

Again though flaring it off in a gas turbine to generate electricity and heat would be ultimately less harmful than just letting it out into the air.

By contrast the tank in an LPG vehicle is at around 8 bar, not a hell of a lot more than the pressure in a truck's tyres. On my old Range Rover the LPG tank is considerably less spicy than the air suspension tank at 15 bar, which is getting into "this can injure you" territory.

Of course, Romania had oil too, but it was exporting most of it, and there was a lot of natural gas left over.

Stick it in cars, they'll burn any old shite and emit water and carbon dioxide - two terrible greenhouse gases, for sure, but you'll extract useful work from it instead of literally just heating the atmosphere for the fun of it.


We now know that, contrary to the cotton bag, they turn into microplastics which cost way more to remove from the environment than that reusable bag.


Not when they are properly used as a fossil fuel source. As a fossil fuel source that just happened to also make itself useful in other ways on the voyage from mine to smokestack. As long as we still burn coal for electricity and/or heat it's just stupid to bury plastics (or, worse, let it slowly decay unburied)


It wouldn’t be so bad if you buried it and it stayed buried it, but whatever disposal technology you use it doesn’t work if the plastic is never properly disposed of. Even if people are really careful, for instance, some single use plastics are going to blow away in the wind. Something shoddily made in the bottom of a pond is going to come apart and shed plastics, etc.


It also burns quite well. If are in a location that burns trash in waste-to-energy plants you can get a decent amount of that energy back by throwing it away

Do this thing: 10 pounds of filament poop still exists, + 8 pounds of glue sticks (which is basically a thermoplastic) used, to create something that's eventually going to end up in a landfill.

Recycling or reuse is not as useful as just not creating waste in the first place.


Maybe it looks more amazing in person than in pictures. If not, and the point is a message about waste, then the 80% increase could be cast as part of the message.

Let’s say every month the artist repurposes the last pile of plastic with more glue. At the end of one year, the 10lbs would turn into 1100lbs. At the end of two years the original 10lbs would have turned into 1.3 million lbs of plastic waste. Surely that would frame a very powerful message about plastic waste and green washing misleading public policy.


Or do something entirely different and 100lbs go to the landfill.

Reuse is good if the activity replaces something that would generate more waste. This is the real benchmark, not the case where someone does nothing.

The most efficient thing is always to do nothing and/or kill oneself. This isnt practical, so reusing used materials instead of new when you do something is still net good.


So... don't 3D print anything?

Why use glue at all, he should have done this using a 'stained glass' method. Build some kind of a frame for each area of color and then melt the filimant into it.


hot glue is a petrochemical just like plastic.


They do make biodegradable hot glue [1] but it's still not perfect. It's biodegradable and certified compostable under industrial conditions but it still has a polymer base. It's also not ideal for projects that are always in UV light.

We've been running YOLO for a number of years (since v5) on soccer videos. None of the recent iterations have been significantly better, with v26 scoring worse then v9 and v11 on our tasks. Makes me wonder why this version is being pushed by roboflow and ultralytics.


When I was working with YOLO models it did seem like there was little practical improvements were between all of the spinoff models. It seemed people were pushing new models for personal recognition since the original creator stopped working on it.

That said, many of the claimed improvements in this model were are efficiency related.


The original YOLO author has long quit due to ethical reasons.


Despite having a very memorable paper on the topic I believe they now work at Ai2.


Can't speak for 26, but a year ago I worked on a project that migrated from v5 to 11 because of improved image segmentation capabilities. My understanding is that the newer versions don't necessarily have better precision/recall, but they tend to be faster for equivalent results, and have increased capabilities.


What I find cool is not the model in itself, but the architectures / training methods found that make the model better. It gives out a new possibilites for other fields of AI. (Notably if you want to fine tune other CV models)


We happened to be in Borsh beach around a week or so ago, and that will be a tourist wreck in 2 years. Multiple working sites, 70% of the beach already claimed by beds.

Quite laid-back in May / start of June, but I do not want to be there in the high season.


Yes, it will be sadly, and maybe the last beach to be clean(IMO).

Those beaches, those villages, used to be pure nature, but as the time passed, they saw the potential of making money, and started building and drilling. Spring and Summer is all the fuss, after that it's empty, dead, only locals live in villages.

Unfortunately, they will become ghost villages as people living there are very old.


Very interesting idea, I hope you can progress this into a well working, proven application.

I tried to do something very similar a year or 2 ago, more directed towards meditation. (Ie as a helper that uses breath to detect a wandering mind). A microphone in itself wasn't sufficient in my case, and detection was quite hard. I ended up using wired earbuds with microphones.

This seems exactly not what you want. If fully invested in this, you never have the freedom to switch tools, ie go to a different team chat solution. The benefits of having these apps in one UI / ecosystem are relatively small: files - teamchat makes sense, but todo-email, kanban-recpies doesn't add any value.

Like samdixon mentions with ClickUp, the downside is quite large UX wise: you'd be constantly switching context witin dobase. Having 10 pinned tabs for all your tools is very convenient, checking a todo while working on an email in dobase feels messy.


I actually rather dislike having my info spread over a gazillion services, all of them having their own paid accounts or advertising. Also, a single unified search for all communication and shared notes would be very helpful.

Also, I'm not familiar with ClickUp nor Dobase, but I imagine you can have them open in multiple tabs, allowing for your preferred way of working?

Yes? Mamba-2 optimized for training speed compared to Mamba-1. Mamba-3 adds optimization for inference. These are pretty much version numbers.


And here I am, feeling slightly ashamed at taking 1 or 2 flights a year. These "commute" statistics are staggering.


Cost wise it does not seem very effective. .5 token / sec (the optimized one) is 3600 tokens an hour, which costs about 200-300 watts for an active 3090+system. Running 3600 tokens on open router @.4$ for llama 3.1 (3.3 costs less), is about $0,00144. That money buys you about 2-3 watts (in the Netherlands).

Great achievement for privacy inference nonetheless.


I think we use different units. In my system there are 3600 seconds per hour, and watts measure power.

And 0.5 tokens/s should work out to 1800 tokens at the end of the hour. Not 3600 as stated.


Something to consider is that input tokens have a cost too. They are typically processed much faster than output tokens. If you have long conversations then input tokens will end up being a significant part of the cost.

It probably won't matter much here though.


Open router is highly subsidized. This might be cheaper in the long run once these companies shift to taking profits


But why not cross that bridge then. By that time you might have much more optimized local infrastructure. Although I do see that someone suffering through the local slowness now is what drives the development of these local options.

Why is this so damn important? Isn't it more important to end up with the best result?

I (in Norway) use a homelab with Ollama to generate a report every morning. It's slow, but it runs between 5-6 am, energy prices are at a low, and it doesn't matter if it takes 5 or 50 minutes.

author here! i originally intended this to be a technical write-up on everything i learned building an ATS (as someone who's in HR). the original title was "how to build an ATS and why you probably shouldn't". i debated mentioning what i built, but it felt hollow to _ramble_ about schemas, architecture, components with nothing to show for it.

the more i wrote and reflected, the more i thought about why the market never corrects itself despite the tools being expensive and badly designed. i've worked with hundreds of recruiters and most use spreadsheets. that's not a workflow quirk but i think an indictment of something bigger which traces back to everything in the post -- the buyer who never uses the product, the integrations racket, the "AI-native" tools bolted on top of a broken foundation, etc. etc.

so i ended up writing the first half. it's drawn from my experiences frustratingly buying an ATS for a small business, and watching the dysfunction of procurement/integration/lack of adoption play out at the enterprise level.

admittedly, HR/recruiting tech is a very niche audience, so the technical section probably lands better with engineers who've been handed a recruiting project than with anyone actually working in HR. so i wanted to offer a resource from that perspective.


Surprising how badly Jetbrains implemented AI. Apparently to such an extent that even after multiple years of LLM's someone felt confident enough to build a company that can do better.
