We can say "Bon voyage" to ever seeing a Sparrow iPad app. shakes fist

So much comic sans!! Ahhhgg!!

In all seriousness, though, neat tool. It's kinda sluggish on the new iPad, though.

I think this a sound strategy in the beginning to keep the lights on. In the end, though, there's more glory when you land and maintain the clients you want with no middle man.

Start proving yourself anyway you can, right now. You need to start building a kick ass portfolio if you want the referrals to come rolling in.

Take on pro bono projects for charities you respect, shitty lower-paying clients and launch a side project that demonstrates your skills in a real world use cases.

Work into every conversation that you're a freelance designer. It's a big deal.

My last piece of advice is to network with quality people. Stay far way from the insurance agents and MLM'ers; they're looking for the quick sale and they will connect you with people that want the same. Make it a point to get to know _business owners_ and people that call the shots--the ones writing the checks.

Oh, yeah. One more thing: This isn't gonna be easy. So, good luck! :)

Perfect advice. In addition to this, get a lawyer to write you a contract to go along with your invoice.

Exactly. Despite Apple's schizophrenic application of their guidelines, Rogue Amoeba simply needs to take responsibility for everything you pointed out here. To continue to do otherwise is unprofessional and only hurts them in the end. Apple will continue to make billions.

P.S. Who else had to Google clef-de-voûte? FYI: It basically means "most important component" or "key element." (via bab.la)

Clef de voûte is the polygonal piece at the center top of a voute (big wall opening in cathedrals for example).

Without it everything falls appart.

Keystone in English

Why is it that in every thread discussing Apple's potential misbehavior, people bring up their extreme profitability as if that were somehow relevant to the question of right and wrong? Drives me nuts.

I guess the argument(I don't really agree) is that ~99% of their customers don't know about all this and don't care, thus Apple need not care about some random developers because it doesn't hurt sales in the least and that Apple exists to make money for their shareholders and not to foster openness and innovation or necessarily doing what's right for their users.

Also see http://daringfireball.net/2011/03/dirty_percent

That would make sense if the argument were, "Apple must do this or else face failure in business," but that's almost never it.

heh, I was about to, but then I saw your response. Thanks.

Keystone, then?

If you pull it out, does everything fall down?

Yes.

Congrats guys! How much?

On what basis would a university have any say about what a student does with her notes? I can't think of one--legal, moral or ethical.

I certainly hope this doesn't become something more universities waste their time on, because this is ludicrous.

(edit: typo)

It's hard for me to align myself with Anonymous because I really don't like how they give support to the ideas I agree with, but, man, it sure does look exciting from where I'm standing.

You haven't read his biography yet, have you?

I have to agree. Getting insights on the small things like this demonstrate to me in simpler terms bigger ideas blogs like this communicate.
