I always have this joke I tell which I'm starting to get more serious about. I'd like to get a medium size statue of myself made that I can hand down. It's hard to lose and would need to be deliberately destroyed(or disaster) to stop existing.

This isn't limited to recruiters. Software sales has shown up on my phone often enough that I don't know if I want my profile public anymore... It's basically a public directory of every tech company.

You all over think everything on this forum. I guess that's part of the beauty of it and likely how some people get stuck doing nothing.

What, I'm over thinking things because a bunch of SF techy folks preferred the world startup to company?

You are probably right about the forced advertising but I have mostly positive memories of Channel 1. I actually think those programs/TVs probably help peak a lot of kid's interest in media. The school I went to had their own news broadcast that came on every Friday. It was entirely produced by the students and everyone really enjoyed it. A good friend of mine was a part of that program and went on to become a TV camera man. It wasn't all bad and we probably could have used some Clearasil.

Please don't listen to blanket nonsense like stop eating carbs. They are not unhealthy, and serve as fuel for whatever exercise/activity you choose to do. Exercise more and eat a well balanced diet including carbs, fat, and protein.

I think the point he's making is that they achieved this in a much shorter time frame and they basically used cell phones to accomplish it. The companies you listed have been around for decades.

I think he was referring to the small businesses that actually used services like Groupon and LivingSocial to sell their products.

I think he's being sarcastic or trolling.

Interesting because I'm familiar with the site but why is this here?

Besides Grantland stories popping up frequently on HN, ESPN is an interesting and significant company...not just because of its pure size and near monopoly over sports entertainment, but because of its willingness to invest money in non-profitable media ventures, like Grantland...Grantland was a great example of what happens when you hire the best writers and give them room to work.

I'm not sure I see the hacker news connection myself. It's a news site about sports. They weren't really doing anything particularly innovative besides the popular editor and good writers.

"They weren't really doing anything particularly innovative"

Well, better get back to posting about the next "unicorn" with no business plan.

A big part of it is that Grantland was seldom accused of writing "clickbait" or churning out low-quality content. They had talented writers producing good longform material. If ESPN couldn't make that profitable, it's a blow to the argument (often seen on HN) that people are willing to pay for quality journalism.

See a piece like this:

Not about sports, informative, and thoughtful.

I think the story of passionate people pouring their hearts into their work for several years, believing they were creating something great, only to see in crumble in a few short months, would resonate with this crowd.

I really don't understand the unending complaints about why stories are submitted to HN. The title is 5 words:

   ESPN suspends publication of Grantland
You couldn't ask for a more succinct title. Just how hard is it to skip that story if you're not interested? I skip the majority of stories on HN. It's not hard to do.

I agree with you that it needs more study. Were you prescribed Marijuana? If not, then it seems like you may have just coincidentally been one of the few people who's performance improved as a result taking this drug.
