It's very likely that since IQ comes from good Gene's, that a least some of the effect is the other way around ; you make more because you are more intelligent, and you're more intelligent in part due to better genetic qualities. a huge part of having average IQ is just being healthy enough to get there.
great article and I think shows the way forward. HN has a very technical userbase and overestimates linux as an desktop operating system. Desktop ubuntu installs are down year over year. If you're not a software engineer, getting linux working well (even ubuntu) and keeping it that way is pretty much impossible. Comparatively, W10 will boot on any hardware and take care of itself. even a mechanical or EE engineer without a lot of linux administration skill will struggle; Literally just talked to a friend going thru this yesterday.
Win10 running WSL2 with docker integrated is a better dev experience than running native linux - you can flip up new machines at will, from any distro and they're easy to manage and play nice with VSCode.
I used to dual boot windows and ubuntu and have moved over to just running WSl2, as it minimizes the time I spend administering linux , patching and doing upgrades.
sure. you might be something else and have a lot of linux experience - I think most people who have this are either devs or some related profession, perhaps sysadmin or adjacent roles. Still, you're kidding yourself if you think the average EE or ME, hell pick any STEM field, knows what the hell is going on with linux (not that none do)
My dad is not in the IT field or anything remotely similar (marine bio/fishing/navigation). Yet he has run gnu/linux as the OS for his primary machines for 10+ years. He has only the basic understanding at a high level but he surprises me with how he can "get by" and remain productive.
actually, for many metro areas the delinquency rate is reaching 25%+ for FHA loans right now. they're surviving due to the feds preventing foreclosure.
things are a little better in the other classes of loans but not much! if the economy stays weak and jobs dont come back, some metros may well see a housing price decline. Atlanta, Houston and san anton.
Sure, but the parent comment was saying they're worried the Fed will lose all the money. But the Fed is buying things broadly (initially they bought Bond ETFs/funds!), so while some places will be higher, others will be lower.
My guess is that even more than during the financial crisis, people are delinquent but would absolutely pay if they could. Was your housing price decline statement supposed to be about those homes becoming underwater and therefore the buyers walk away / end up in foreclosure?
uh... didnt early proponents of many worlds interpretation actually say that it did? Say Hugh Evrett? If it is reinterpreted to say otherwise, is it really the same QM model anymore?
> I don't think anyone is claiming the protests are 100% peaceful.
Some people certainly are, I've heard a few people who attended the riots in Seattle claim the police were the only ones rioting. They're very adamant about that 'only' and any evidence to the contrary is met with "well he's a cop in disguise." It's a case of No True Protestor.
It's very tiresome when people demand you believe their transparent bullshit.
you might do well to learn what attributes classical theism claims of a deity before slandering them; any deity bound by the natural laws of the world is hardly in keeping with the claims of theistic traditions of all stripes , excluding some late 20th century evangelical protestants.
and the problem of evil is only significant to lay people; in the study of the philosophy of religion it has been considered a rather weak objection for some time now.
The wavefunction isn't ontic. This means that, even if God can see the whole universe, they can't actually know the real values associated with each particle; they can only have an epistemic, partial view. You might do well to study some quantum mechanics!
supernatural means above the natural order; your conception of a deity is out of step with traditional theism and represents straw man building at best
No amount of natural evidence (that is, empirical evidence) can ratify a supernatural belief. Following Popper, then, the burden of evidence is on you to overcome quantum mechanics.
We're both deists, by the way. I follow the Flying Spaghetti Monster. However, the FSM is absurd, which means that I cannot use the FSM's existence to conclude facts, and additionally doesn't affect the material universe. Also, the FSM doesn't maintain cults, encourage child abuse, start wars, nor allow simony.
Your "traditional theism" is metaphysically and epistemically weak; it cannot say anything about the world other than that its deity exists and has material affect upon the universe. However, empirically, there is no evidence of the deity (because they are supernatural), and so the deity cannot have any scientific method associated with it. Simply put, there's no room in the natural world for a supernatural being! Every empirical effect is instead considered scientifically.
The only gap left would be for you to show that miracles or other supernatural phenomena are real. On that, I have nothing polite to say, just to wish you good luck on what will definitely fail.
I've not confessed to or recanted anything, silly; I merely have outlined my position more clearly so that you don't have any ridiculous dodges like "that's what an atheist would say."
I don't have a straw man. I have any deity which is like Jehovah, with Jehovah himself as a special case. Any deity is subject to self-defeating arguments and open to criticism from science.
I am not a naturalist, but that's the closest position that you can imagine, I guess.
Anyway, if you don't actually want to talk about QM, then we'll just have to talk about how Jehovah's followers keep trying to do something about COVID-19, but all of their appeals have led to nothing. Meanwhile, science and technology give us models for understanding, combating, and preventing the pandemic. Are you really going to pledge yourself to your deity and cough your lungs out?
Broskie, take it from an agnostic/natural theist, who actually ended up going down the Philosophy of Religion rabbit hole. Throwaway is right. You've lost before you even got started. The arguments you brought up have been well trod, and very influential pieces of theistic philosophy built around them.
Science can only posit the how. Not the who or the why. Throwing quantum mechanics at the problem doesn't solve anything either, because ultimately you at some point at the end of a nigh infinite chain of why are left with the question "Why something rather than Nothing?"
The answer is either silence, or God, the recognized nominative signpost of the answer , even by the Wittgensteinian approach.
Your COVID-19 related rantings commit the fallacy of assuming the nature of God, or committing the anthropocentric fallacy of thinking God even gives a rat's arse about us, or that there is enough of a working understanding of prayer to count on it in a technological way. It's not a terribly uncommon itis for the modern theistic skeptic, but does demonstrate a horrendous lack of effort in having grounded one's skepticism through actual effort to confront and dismantle the theistic construct at it's core, or to understand it's place in human society.
Religion has no beef with science, nor the other way around.
All you're showing is that you don't know much of quantum mechanics either. Should you choose to change that, MIT has published a nice lecture series on quantum physics [0], the first in a group of three.
Your bold claim "why something rather than nothing?" assumes that there is, in fact, a something to refer to, and QM directly challenges the simplicity of that assumption. So many words to fight against the lack of an ontic wavefunction!
Again, strawmen and worse. Theism hardly excludes science or technology. 3 children down you attempt to change the subject again. You have already admitted that you could only argue against deism. I don't expect everyone to come to the light (Strong links between autism & atheism); I do expect a higher level of commentary on HN ...
The purpose of marriage is not and has ever been to be happy all the time. If you view love and marriage as about a transaction where the output must always be happiness, then you're setting an impossible standard. The author presupposed that marriage is about feeling really good all the time, well - most of us are going to hit hard times at some point. If you're so selfish as to believe your partner must always increase your own happiness - you're going to have a really bad time dealing with the realities in life. You might even be such a narcissist that you map your own failings onto the other person and decide they are 'wrong' when you're really a stubborn, selfish, unlovable hedonist.
In this territory, a lot of arguments of the form "This does seem to be the obvious conclusion based on our human thought ,but that is a mere delusion/illusion" - the implication is that someone has an ultra-insightful way to see through the illusion. They don't ; they just seek a little bit of self-edification and ego-stroking by suggesting as much. Arguments of that style are incredibly weak "It only VERY POWERFULLY SEEMS SO" is actually an admission that an unbiased person would reach the conclusion being rejected. The scientific community clung to the steady-state model of cosmology for nearly a century before embracing Big-Bang theory - this was due to philosophical attachments rather than any sort of evidence - these sorts of motivations are still at play today. They mocked and derided those who advanced alternatives until the evidence became so overwhelming that it could no longer be denied.
I really get sad seeing wishfull thinking like this. In mice, it has been demonstrated that parkinsons is linked to damaged neurons - the cells are damaged for the lifetime of the animal and the symptoms appear only later in life. I have parkisons on both sides of my family tree, I've watched people die from it , I'm watching close loved ones wither away even now. I despise these feel good articles that offer false hope to the aflicted...
Sometimes this stuff really bums me out..time to get on leetcode I guess!
