Putting engineering after a term doesnt make it engineering.

Software engineering is certainly not engineering. Even at the highest levels. Real engineering have infinitely more complex interactions in the physical world than symbolic institutions for machines.

Thats right, no need to understand anything other than symbols on a machine. No people involved. No reality to model. No economics to think about. Nothing like real engineering. Thats for the big boys and girls

Probably just using the convention started by the term "prompt engineering", which is forgivable.

not sure i forgive "prompt engineering"

Its certainly a choice to accuse antirez of all people

True, let's not criticize those saints of ours.

Do you remember anything you “studied”?

I do, bwrap.

It's not very complicated and I actually wanted to learn it. AI doesn't make learning magically easier, but it writes decent quizzes and debugs answers so it's better than just reading the manual

What are some useful ways SaaS companies are using AI? Great way to axe your customer support team.

I don't know about useful, but the most visible one is copywriting. Even when there's a human involved, every startup/small org I know runs content through them. (And that includes this article.) It's definitely something that companies want even if they don't necessarily need it (like analytics).

By far the best AI+human customer support mechanism I've experienced is through SMS/messages. They support auth, they're asynchronous, there's no app or custom interface to timeout, it's easy to send complex queries as text and you have the log right there. Apple does this really well. Delta also does, surprisingly, because their AI phone bot is garbage. It's also presumably easier for the human agents to multi-task.

Do you folks know any support bot which is actually useful to the customer? No, I don't mean cheap for the company, I mean helping, I mean fulfilling the goal for which (at least according on the powerpoints) it exists?

In Xero for example I can search for invoices or contacts in a much slower and more cumbersome fashion in the new AI tool than I can with the old search field!

Oh, you mean a useful way, never mind.

Great ways to get buzzwords on your investor slides!

I make a point of describing things written conventionally as "not using artificial intelligence, just using good old-fashioned reliable analogue stupidity".

I mostly meant getting to call your product barely used AI toilet paper instead of just barely used toilet paper.

> Ai has established itself through the weak channels that are filled with greed,

That explains the prolific AI use as incompetent agencies like the DoJ, DOGE, and others under the current administration

I think its laziness. Having long difficult conversations with your kids takes effort. Chucking them into a STEM path they dont care about is way easier.

There are no outages in Azure sing se.

GitHub's Ops team would approve this message, I assume.

i see you, brother! <3

> effectively pulling the rug from under their customers.

This is the whole point of AI. Its a black box that they can completely control.

I hope local models advance to the point they can match Opus one day...

If OP is correct, Opus has regressed to a point where local models are already on par with it.

Having tried GLM-5 and Minimax M2.5, alongside regularly using Opus 4.6 (on default thinking): Opus is still much, much better at writing non-garbage code. I haven't yet tried GLM-5.1 though.

Considering the advances in software and hardware, I would expect that in 2 or 3 years.

And I hope we will eventually reach a point where models become "good enough" for certain tasks, and we won't have to replace them every 6 months.

(That would be similar to the evolution of other technologies like personal computers and smartphones.)

We said this since ChatGPT 3. People will never be content with local models.

No no no. We’re a Christian nation. Fuck them kids (literally, on an island). Get rich, fuck young models. Just like the President.

I used it for MMO goldfarming - circa 2012/2013

Damn that’s impressive. Wasn’t it all command line at the time?
